Congratulations to our Head of Research, Barbara Arbanas Ferreira, who has been recognized as one of Europe’s leading voices in the marine sector! She is featured in the newly launched book “Women Ocean Champions: Stories of Women Shaping the EU Blue Economy,” an initiative by the EU-funded WIN-BIG project.
The book, which officially launched in March 2026, celebrates 100 women across Europe whose work is driving innovation, sustainability, and leadership in the Blue Economy. Barbara’s profile highlights her journey as a scientist and her pioneering research in marine robotics, serving as an inspiration for the next generation of women in highly technical fields.
As the Head of Research at the MARBLE Center of Excellence, Barbara was selected for her significant contributions to Marine Energy and Robotics—one of the three high-tech sectors targeted by the WIN-BIG project to address gender gaps and promote capacity building. Her story in the book delves into the “real journey” of a career in ocean science, covering the breakthroughs, persistence, and vision required to lead in a space that has traditionally been male-dominated.
The WIN-BIG project (Women In Blue Economy Intelligence Gathering and Capacity Boosting) is a 1.3 million euro EU initiative focused on mapping gender status across all six European sea basins. By showcasing role models like Barbara, the project aims to debunk gender biases and encourage more women and young girls to enter, thrive, and lead in the maritime industries.
